A Brief History of Drachenswald
by Cymoryl Tach'nerhyn
Introduction:
As the title suggests, this is going to be a bare outline of the events
and people involved in the founding (and maintenance) of the Drachenswald
region of FurryMUCK. Special thanks go to BoingDragon and Khryss for
providing detailed background on Tyrrhyan history and the Stelya-rhyan, very
little of which will find its way into this outline :}
Part 1: Before the Beginning
Once upon a time, there arose a race of dragons known as the Tyrrhyans.
Their history is long, complex, and beyond the scope of this outline, but
here's a few basics: A few of them are immortal, and they have a subrace
called the Stelya-rhyan which serve as living starships.(1)
It was a young stelya-rhyan named Naiam that discovered a space-time
anomaly while investigating an evaporating black hole. She passed through
into Furry's continuum, and suffered an immediate system shock from her
power and sensory systems being out of phase with the local time flow. A
group of researchers and explorers was with her, but not being tied into
the quantum flux of space-time, they didn't suffer any ill-effects.
Naiam managed a barely controlled landing in a shallow valley, exhausting
her energy reserves. Since she couldn't draw more than a trickle of energy
from the local continuum, she went into a state of hibernation in order to
rebuild her reserves and align herself to this new universe. The dragons
that she carried to Furry attempted to settle into the environment, but when
it became clear that Naiam would take a long time to recuperate, they all
decided to wait out the duration in stasis.
Part 2: BoingDragon and Company
After Naiam had been missing for several months, her sister Naiad sought
out the help of two immortal Tyrrhyans: Khryss and Kainudy. Together, they
traced Naiam's course to the anomaly, and entered it with more caution. If
not for Khryss, Naiad would have suffered the same fate as her sister, but
was buffered against the shock by Khryss, who could react faster to the
change in time-flow.(2)
While only a year had passed on the other side of the anomaly, over 300
centuries had gone by on Furry. Naiam, still in hibernation, had been slowly
buried under layers of sediment, and looked like another part of the hills
in the region, her bulk having filled the small valley she landed in. By
this age, Furry had become populated by people from various other worlds and
universes.
Since Naiad also needed time to recuperate and adjust, and since the time
they spent here would barely register in their home universe, Khryss and
Kainudy decided to stay awhile. Khryss raised a small volcanic island from
its roots, and altered and sealed the extinct magma chamber to house Naiad
while she rested. A special power system was created to help feed the
stelya-rhyan, so she wouldn't need so long as Naiam to recover. This same
power system is what keeps the Floating Island aloft. A similar system was
installed underground, near to Naiam to provide her with more energy
also.(3)
Since only Khryss was capable of travelling back to Tyrrhyn and report on
their situation, there were several months when he was gone from
Furry.(4)
Part 3: Time-travellers limited to one item of carry-on luggage only
About 20 years from now, Naiam will recover and be discovered by Cymoryl,
the daughter of Khryss and the dragoness Tachyon, who hasn't been born yet
in the present. Upon discovery, it will be found that the original dragons
that accompanied Naiam to Furry had perished due to quantum decay during
their long time in stasis. The youngest of them died only a few years before
Naiam regained full consciousness, however. Because of this, Naiam offered
to use her stellar drive to send Cymoryl back in time as far as possible, in
order to revive the others before their damage became fatal.
Cymoryl agreed, and Naiam was able to send her back about 20 years, into
the present day. Only one Tyrrhyan survived revival, the youngest: Timur.
While Khryss and Kainudy had been in the area for a while then, it was Timur
that truly explored and opened up Drachenswald, making it the region it is
today.
Footnotes:
(1) While sharing the complete genetic code of a typical Tyrrhyan, a
stelya-rhyan also posesses a bewildering array of organic and inorganic
genetics. Over 1600 meters long at maturity, and massing close to one-half
billion tons, the bear little resemblence to their draconic brethren,
looking more like a thick-finned remora. They draw their energy directly
from the fabric of space-time, and have a neurophysical system that would
give Einstein nightmares.
(2) Khryss and Kainudy were the original creators of the stelya-rhyan.
Khryss himself is a rather unique entity, capable of manipulating reality
in a less restricted way than the stelya-rhyan themselves.
(3) These power systems form a rather extensive network throughout the
area of Drachenswald. The most visible extension is the JumpRoom.
(4) The original BoingDragon was actually Khryss. The title passed over
to Kainudy while he was away, and she retains the name to this day.
